Many people who need dental implants don’t realize that an implant consists of three parts. The abutments, which are connectors that allow the prosthesis to fit into the implanted screw, are vital to makingeffective as replacements for real teeth.
The abutment teeth are simply those that surround the prosthesis (sometimes called a “crown”), which is the part that looks like a real tooth. These teeth play a vital role in being successfully treated with an implant, bridge, or partial denture.
In the case of partial dentures, for example, the clasps that support the device are attached to the abutment teeth. If there is insufficient room for the abutment, the abutment teeth may need to be reshaped to fit it.
