“Edentulism” is the term that medical professionals use to describe tooth loss or toothlessness. Though it technically applies to missing one or more teeth (“partial edentulism”), it is usually only used when a patient has lost all of their natural teeth (“full edentulism”). Regardless of the cause, including a traumatic oral injury, serious periodontal disease, or untreated dental caries, edentulism is a serious condition with mental and physical implications for the patient.
Partial or full edentulism has a serious impact on the patient’s self-image and confidence. When left untreated, edentulism can lead to a worsening quality of life as a result. Physical functioning is also a consideration since missing teeth can lead to chronic speaking and chewing problems.
Edentulism is also a known cause of bone loss in the jaw due to lacking vital nutrients normally provided by real teeth. This is just another reason why edentulism is a condition that warrants immediate diagnosis and treatment by a trained professional.
