“Immediate implant placement” refers to when the oral surgeon places the implant during the same visit that your tooth was extracted. This is not a self-explanatory procedure that all oral surgeons can accomplish.
To insert the implant into the same position as a newly extracted tooth is difficult due to the sensitivity of the tissue in the freshly opened socket. Skill, experience, and time are required to complete the operation this way. The clinical outcome is virtually the same as having the extraction and implant done on separate days, but there are some advantages to immediate implant placement.
The biggest advantage is preventing further bone loss. Missing a tooth for even a month can lead to a loss of mass and density in the jawbone due to lacking nourishment from the missing teeth. Immediate implant placement also helps the area heal with a lower risk for infection or other complications.
